Week 2 (10/05/17)

Kamusta kamo?

I hope everyone is maayo-gid! This past week was even better than the first week! We spend so much time with our district that we have become very close. We trust each other which allows us to share openly our thoughts in class and the Holy Ghost is always present. The strongest moment was just yesterday in class. We made a list of questions we had; they were all very different from each other. Then we began reading Alma 24 in Ilonggo while also looking at the English and we talked about the story of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis. For those of you unfamiliar with this story the Anti-Nephi-Lehis were part of the Lamanites. They were angry, ferocious, and wild. Then a missionary by the name of Ammon came along and because of his compassion, humility, faith and the Holy Ghost, the hearts of these people were opened and they were converted unto Jesus Christ. They buried their weapons  (and changed their name to Anti-Nephi-Lehis) as a covenant to God that they had become a changed people and would no longer delight in bloodshed. Other Lamanites learned of this and became angry with them, to the point that they decided to attack their brethren. The Anti-Nephi-Lehis refused to take up their weapons and kill. Instead, they laid down before their attackers who slayed a thousand of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis. The verse that struck me was at the end of verse 23 "and they praised God even in the very act of perishing under the sword" The attacking Lamanites hearts were softened by the Anti-Nephi-Lehis, they threw down their weapons and refused to continue to slay them. More people were changed than killed that day. And of those who were killed, it says "we have no reason to doubt but that they were saved." What an amazing testament to me of faith and trust in God! And not only that but EVERY SINGLE ONE of the questions we had written or even thought of but not said aloud was answered by this one chapter. The Spirit in the room as we discussed this story was so strong, peace enveloped the room, and each of us knew and testified that the Book of Mormon can answer all of our questions. I am so glad we have decided to serve God and His children and to help them come unto Christ and change their hearts like the people of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis.

Whew that was a long story! I wish I could talk about General Conference and how amazing it was too but I figure most of you already know how amazing it was. Listening to the Lord's called apostles is always a source of spiritual strength! My favorite talk was from W. Craig Zwick. His advice to us is to "look beyond what you see" (quoted from the Lion King) and I encourage you all to see what you can learn when you look with spiritual eyes, beyond our physical eyes.

The funniest moment of the week was also yesterday. We were all sitting in the classroom inbetween dinner and class just talking and practicing our lessons when Elder Yancey made some weird noise that I found especially hilarious and I couldn't stop laughing. I couldn't breathe, turned red, and my eyes began to water because I was laughing so hard. Then Elder Yancey said in a weird British accent, maybe he was going for Australian: "Aye mate, I've finally made a girl cry" and with that everyone started cracking up. Just picture 8 missionaries in a classroom doubled over laughing and feeding off each other's laughter for a solid 5 minutes. With all our studying and lesson planning, having a good laugh helps to ease any stress we feel.

My times about up but I want to let you know I appreciate your thoughts and prayers! I feel so uplifted each and every day, and I know it's because I have such amazing family and friends. The picures attached are this weeks Twinning Tuesday (green if you couldn't tell) and a picture of our shoes as requested by Elder Baldwin. Also, I realized I didn't explain who was who so in the green picture right to left back row is Sister Clarke, Sister Burkhardt, me, Sister Hostetter (kaupod/companion), Elder Baldwin, Elder Harmon, and one of our like 6 teachers Elder Shumway who happened to also be wearing a green tie, then in the front is Elder Yancey (right) and Elder Keller (left).

Remember to say your prayers and read your scriptures! I know you will find answers to your questions if you ask God and study the Book of Mormon!
Love you all!
Sister Bingham
